Watching the News

I had the bizarre experience of crying and then laughing while I was watching the news this evening. There was a story about a little girl and her father drowning while ice skating this afternoon and I couldn't help tearing up about it as it was so sad to imagine. However, not more than a minute later they started showing coverage of a stampede at a Wal-Mart in Michigan, which occurred when they opened the doors for the big Day After Thanksgiving Sale. I know what kind of negative implications the footage depicts concerning our society, and I also know that two people were injured in the melee (which obviously sucks) but seeing shoppers climbing over one and other to get into Wal-Mart with wigs falling off, and sound bytes of enraged commentary from the participants... it just got the best of me and I burst out laughing!

There certainly are depressing stories on the news everyday, yet, you have to watch now and then if only for the simple entertainment value of human life. (HOLY SHIT AM I SOUNDING LIKE A SOCIOLOGIST)
